11 Words Spanish Speakers Pronounce Badly

Okay, let's have a look at 10 words that I cannot bear to hear wrong anymore.

 

It's super important to put the stress of the word on the correct syllable in English. If you don't, this can really make it difficult for native speakers to understand you.

 

So in the first 4 words the stress goes on the last syllable of the word.    

 

1. Afternoon
Word no. 1 is this one. I hear so many times "Afternoon.. Hey Greg good afternoon!" No! Last syllable!! Good afternoon!  

 

2. Hotel.

"Excuse me where is the hotel? No!! Where is the hotel? hotel. So: hotel, afternoon.    

 

3. Exam

Yes I have my exam next week. No you don't, you have your exam next week. Maybe you have your exam on Tuesday afternoon at the hotel.... perhaps.    

 

4. Magazine

You did not read it in a magazine. No! You read it in a magazine. Magazine.    

 

Now the 5th word is the opposite. Everybody puts the stress on the last syllable but we want it on the first syllable. The word is...

 

5.Email.

I will send you an Email. Not email no! I will send you and Email.

 

The next word is a word that I don't mind people mispronouncing it, but it's crazy, people don't believe me when I tell them the correct pronunciation. The word is...

 

6. Mayor
And the correct pronunciation is the sound that you would expect a sheep to make. Mayor! Mayor! Mayor!

 

Alright next one is, this word... 

 

7. Since

I hear since all the time. I don't understand why. It's since, since.  

 

And then we have 3 words which are similar...

 

8, 9 & 10. Could, Would, Should
In each of these words we do not pronounce the L. The L is silent, completely silent, like 100% silent – it doesn't exist in spoken English. So the pronunciation is could, would, should.  

 

And finally this word...

 

11. Tuesday
Let's face it, a lot of student learned this word a long, long time ago. And still pronounce it wrong.

 

It's Choo, choo, choo, like the sound the train makes: choo, choo! Tuesday. Monday, Tuesday, achoo! Tuesday.
