A common mistake among ESL learners is the construction of sentences using the verb give. In this free video lesson, you are going to learn about the two possible constructions we can use with this verb and how to use it correctly.

So as you can see I'm in New York City at the moment.

So, “Give” is often used wrongly in English, so what I'm going to do I'm going to just give you a good example to help you with it.

Now, I'm here at the moment. Check it out... The Statue of Liberty!

Now, the Statue of Liberty has been in the States for 150 years (more or less) and the French gave the Statue of Liberty to the Americans.

The French GAVE the Statue of Liberty TO the Americans.

You GIVE + something + TO + someone  
E.g. The French GAVE + the Statue of Liberty + TO + the Americans.    

Another way of saying this is:  

 

The French GAVE + the Americans + the Statue of Liberty.

 

So just use it, I want you to write one, just one example in the comments below.

 

Let me give you another couple of personal examples:

 

I gave my wife some flowers for Valentine’s day.  or  I gave some flowers to my wife for Valentine’s day.

 

So there are 2 ways we can use this and just remember that “Give” is just generally ‘give something to someone’, but it is also used when we're giving someone a present!
