Like a girl
How many times have we heard or used the expressions run like a girl, throw like a girl or fight like a girl? The and answer to this is probably too many, as the continual use of expressions like this in everyday language can give a negative message to young girls about how they should be thought of in society.
In the video used in this listening exercise, a selection of both men and women are asked to show the cameras what it means to run, fight and throw ‘like a girl’. The same questions are then asked to young girls, and the difference in the perceptions of the expression ‘like a girl’ is amazing.
At what age does ‘like a girl’ become something negative? Why? And who decides this? As the video says, it’s time to rewrite the rules, and make ‘like a girl’ mean something awesome!
