PHRASAL VERB: MAKE UP
You might know the word ‘make-up’ to mean cosmetic products that you put on your face. However, it is also a phrasal verb with many different meanings. Here are some of the various meaning of this common phrasal verb….
Meaning 1: To become friends again after an argument
Example: The boys had a huge fight yesterday, but they’ve made up now.
Meaning 2: Put on cosmetics
Example: His wife spends a long time making her face up before leaving the house.
Meaning 3: Invent a story
Example: She didn’t do her homework and made up a terrible excuse that the dog had eaten it!
Meaning 4: To form a part of a larger thing.
Example: Children make up 50% of the town’s population.
Meaning 5: To do something in order to make a situation better.
Example: Jonny lost his ticket to the concert, so his mum bought him a CD to make up for it.
Meaning 6: Recover a missed class
Example: I couldn’t teach my Yoga class last week as I was ill, so I’m making it up this week.
